Tulum

Getting there

Tulum is about 118 kilometers (73 miles) south of Cancun. There are frequent commercial flights from all over to Cancun. You will need to determine how you will get from Cancun to Tulum, as Tulum grows in popularity there are more options to choose from. The budget choice (approx $15 USD) is taking the bus. The ADO bus company will get you from the airport to downtown Tulum in about 2.5 hours, visit ado.com.mx for details.

These buses are clean and comfortable, but only run 4 times a day. This has meant that I’ve typically taken a private shuttle (there are no Ubers). This is a more expensive option, but it is a long drive and it is the most convenient. You can shop around, we paid approx $200 for 4 people last time.

Once you’re in Tulum you can walk, bike or taxi everywhere.

Stay in Tulum

While on almost every other trip I try to book AirBnBs, in Tulum I like to stay right on the beach, it’s such a luxury. Many years ago we stayed at chic boutique hotel Casa Violeta and it just became our place. They’re at the southern end of the beach strip (though recently there’s been a lot of development south of here, making you smack in the middle of the action). It’s a charming 13 room compound, breakfast is included and their restaurant is good enough to stay for lunch or dinner. There is a tiny but tempting boutique in reception and a yoga pavilion. Very popular in high season, book well in advance.
