MI AMOR
Last year I read about a French culinary institute grad who had moved from New York and landed at the new hotel Mi Amor. Located at the far north end of the beach I dragged us on an epic walk, just when I was about to lose all credibility, we finally found the hidden entrance. We made our way down a winding path flanked with luxury tents to an industrial-chic glamping oasis.
We grabbed a table and proceeded to have an elegant lunch of inventive and delicious Mexican-inspired dishes with a nice bottle of wine. The service was friendly and attentive and we lingered, finding it hard to leave that special place (and face the walk back southward).

HARTWOOD
A relative institution at this point, Hartwood is still worth fighting for a table (though it’s easier than it used to be, now you can actually email ahead of time). Hyper seasonal and local fare cooked on an open flame. I fell in love with Chef Eric Werner’s cooking years ago at Peasant in Manhattan, while this is totally different, it is equally delicious.
POSADA MARGHERITA
Charming bo-ho Italian restaurant right on the beach. Darling shabby-chic setting with welcoming staff, we stop by for lunch or dinner every trip.
CEZNOTILE
I found this place hidden in the jungle years ago on a quest for some live music in Tulum. While we didn’t find any live music, we were rewarded with delicious and interesting food and drinks in a welcoming, funky atmosphere. It was so good we went back again that same week. I missed it last year, but hope it’s still a cozy spot with worthwhile food for the next time.
LA ZEBRA
Embarrassed to look back at the number of visits to La Zebra, but what can I say, good food, good drinks, good vibes. Whenever I can’t decide where to go or what I want, La Zebra is my go-to default. They have a lovely facility and really nice rooms as well.
