MAÑANA

Just one of several great spots at the South Congress Hotel, Mañana is a coffee shop with a bright, modern scandi-mexican vibe and decadent pastries. I have to swing by for one of homegirl Amanda Rockman’s kouign amanns and a cortado on every trip.

BETTER HALF

Yeah, just another hip, stylish coffeehouse with great breakfast, oh and cocktails (this is Austin, of course there’s cocktails). While I’ve only visited for breakfast, the food was so good, I’d go back anytime, I mean c’mon, I never got my cocktail! They won Eater Austin’s restaurant of the year, so I’m not alone here. Check ‘em out.

LORO

Year after year I would get up early and stand in line at the most famous of Austin haunts: Franklin BBQ, only to be turned away. As luck would have it Aaron Franklin finally opened up a still jam-packed, but much larger and doable new place. Loro has an old-lodge feel, great big open patios and fabulous food. I loved everything we had, with the salmon being a huge surprise hit, cannot wait to get back there and stand in line!

LAUNDERETTE

Elevated eclectic Mediterranean food, a nice variety means there’s something for everyone at this hip restaurant. A variety of small plates for sharing (sharing? YUP, I’m a share-er, that way I get to try even more tasty dishes). Nice wine list, custom cocktails & mid-century vibes in a former laundromat. We recommend reservations for this popular spot.

HILLSIDE FARMACY

Looking like a movie set, this former east Austin pharmacy has charm for days. Every detail is perfectly staged, yet it retains a low-key cozy vibe. Offering quality comfort food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this is an any-occasion type of place.

MATTIE’S

Turning on to the drive at Maddie’s from a quiet residential neighborhood, I never expected to be so utterly transported. I suddenly found myself at an 1890s grand estate with spacious shady grounds (and live peacocks). We stopped by for drinks in the garden, but I stole my way through the mansion to discover room after room of tastefully restored interiors. First debuting as a restaurant in 1946, this latest incarnation blends the elegant historic home with modern flair. While I’ve yet to dine there, the menu boasts pricey southern inspired dishes and they make an effort to work with local farmers, but I’d recommend it just on the magical setting alone. P.S. - just enjoyed a lovely dinner at Mattie’s, do yourself a favor and have the fried chicken, so, so good!
